In this fast-paced world we may find ourselves going through the motions. Have you ever stopped to question the outcome that you would like to achieve? Once I made the conscious decision to analyze our overall goals, I was able to transform the methods out of our madness.
Ultimate Goal: Build a legacy in the form of functioning members of society.
That meant I needed to search my soul to seek out the core values of what I felt were most important for all the little people in my life to hold onto for their own roots. So, I got out my notebook and a pen and began my list. I must admit that in the beginning it appeared very basic…It was not long after, that it turned into these well thought out 8 core values:
- Trustworthy
- Benevolent
- Strong Work Ethics
- Overcome Adversity
- Love Yourself
- Productive Communication
- Accountable
- Effective Emotions
Once you decide what values that you want holding down your family tree, the hard part begins…implementation. As I began to take action, each of these topics took on different meanings and expanded immensely. Under the “trustworthy” category, the first thing to remember is that most children do not wake up planning on lying to the caregiver. In my experience a child has learned that lying will either get them out of trouble, get them the attention they are seeking, or get them what they want. It is our responsibility to determine what circumstance we are in and attempt the correction process.
I personally chose “Benevolent” to encompass several aspects of character. Respectful, kind to others, compassionate, tolerant, and well-meaning, were all traits that I feel the whole world could benefit from. As you will be able to see from each of the series in my “Peaches & Pits”, I am doing my best to instill these core values. Although everyone is entitled to their own choice of core values, perhaps one of the books in my series gives your family structure a root to make your tree even stronger.
